Still life painting has always been the genre that doesn’t seem to draw me in. The objects don’t move like a tree swaying in the wind when painting en plein air, nor do they converse with you the way a live portrait sitter does. Yet from time to time I find myself returning to this genre.
What intrigues me most is painting the most banal objects I can find at home or in my studio, whether that’s a cup filled with tea or a fire extinguiser. Painting a vase of flowers seems pointless to me, we already know it is beautiful. Do we really need to be told again?
For this course, we won’t be painting magnificently coloured fruit or delicate lace draped over the table, but rather forms we often disregard as unworthy of our attention. Great thought will be given to composition and light to pay homage to the everyday moments we often miss.
