Gouache is something of a mystery medium. For some, it's a medium they've never heard of, and even those familiar with it may still wonder how to pronounce it! It's a medium I find particularly well suited to building colour, atmosphere, and movement.
In this introductory workshop, we'll focus on painting water as a way to explore what this elusive medium has to offer. I've always been drawn to painting water, whether in gouache or oils. Although water is often transparent, I've long enjoyed the challenge of depicting it with opaque mediums, capturing its movement, light, and reflections.
If you'd like to learn how to paint rivers, seas, and other watery landscapes, this workshop is for you. I'll demonstrate some of the techniques I use, share practical tips and tricks, and discuss common pitfalls to avoid.
Suitable for painters of all experience levels, this workshop will explore how to work from reference images while also drawing on our imagination and intuition to create expressive, engaging paintings.
