'In Studio’ means my place @ 214 Acacia Drive, Ashgrove 4060
‘Plein air’ means about and about. The night before class I’ll send out a text with a nearby location to meet as the weather is unpredictable!
Lesson one (in studio):
Basically this lesson is to make sure everyone feels confident with acrylic paints. We will experiment with mark making and go into some depth about colour mixing and theory (warm and cool colours, light and darks). We will also investigate different surfaces we can apply paint to and the various tools to do so.
Lesson two (in studio):
This lesson a minimalist still life subject will be carefully set up with styrofoam cups (please see pic attached). The focus will be repetition, tone, form and composition with the application of graphite pencils and charcoal. If we get time we will use a minimalist acrylic palette to create a more resolved work. By stripping back our focus to humble styrofoam cups we can appreciate how everyday objects often make for interesting subjects. ‘Less is More!’
Lesson three (plein air):
In this class we will be finding subjects in our local surroundings. The paints will be set aside and instead we will be producing quick sketches in our journals with a range of materials (pencils, crayons, ball point pens, felt tip pens). Towards the second half of the lesson we will pick the two most dynamic sketches and turn these into finished works with watercolours.
Lesson four (plein air):
During this session we will chose our favourite watercolour from the last class and turn it into a resolved painting. It will become apparent how quickly the day changes and the challenges that plein air painting presents.
HW: I ask everyone to bring an artwork they have been working on for lesson five. Adversely if there is something you’ve always wanted to paint, bring along some source materials and we can get started!
Lesson five (in studio):
Self directed learning where I’ll go around and help individuals on their chosen project.
I ask that everyone brings their own sketchbook, sharpener, eraser, pencils and an old shirt to paint in. I can provide these if requested but everyone seems to have a preference.
I’ve also had questions about using different mediums such as oil paint….by all means bring them along to use instead of acrylics.
